House Passed the 21st Century Cures Act

US House of Representatives

On July 10, the House passed 21st Century Cures Act (H.R. 6), a bill to help modernize and personalize health care, encourage greater innovation, support research, and streamline the system.

Advances in research continue to occur at a fast pace but the process of moving these discoveries out of the lab and into the real world where they can benefit people is frustratingly slow. The 21st Century Cures Act is designed to speed the process from scientific discovery to health treatments and cures for people who need them.

House Passed the 21st Century Cures Act

What does it mean for you? The NeuroCommunity Foundation is especially encouraged by the inclusion of H.R. 292 – Advancing Research for Neurological Diseases Act of 2015 – as a provision of H.R. 6, the goal of which is to establish a data system to track the incidence and prevalence of neurological diseases, including movement disorders and multiple sclerosis.

This provision will help advance research by establishing a data systems to collect the size and makeup of the population diagnosed with neurological disorders. Currently, no one has an accurate account of how many people in the United States have Parkinson’s or MS, or the demographic characteristics of those living with the disease. As a result, researchers are working at a distinct disadvantage because they are operating without basic information. By establishing this data system, researchers will be supplied data that may point to new environmental triggers, which could lead to a better understanding of the disease and new disease targets.

What’s next for H.R. 6? On July 13 it was received in the Senate and referred to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.

How can you help? We salute all the advocates who worked so hard and we ask all of you to contact your Senators about this important cause as well as thank your Representative for voting.

Update: In California, the Parkinson’s Registry (signed in 2004 by Gov. Schwarzenegger) has yet to be funded. Please contact us now if you would like to join the effort to keep the Registry alive. The Registry was designed to provide key demographic data in tracking the disease (similar to the California Cancer Registry) in order to identify the underlying causes and risk factors of Parkinson’s.
