New Way of Administering Apomorphine for PD Movement “wearing off” Periods

Apomorphine, an injectable drug to treat reappearing PD movement symptoms after Levodopa treatments, could be administered by dissolving it under the tongue.

Cynapsus Therapeutics, Inc. has started a study to test apomorphine to treat “wearing off” periods recurrent after years of Levodopa treatments. Instead of injecting apomorphine under the skin, the company designed a strip, like Listerine®, that will be administered by placing it under the patient’s tongue, effectively delivering the drug.

Study results showed potential to help people cope with PD “wearing off” episodes. In addition, when compared with other similar drugs, apomorphine has the advantage of rapid effect. However, some drawbacks about its use are nausea and vomiting. Further research is still necessary, such as including a placebo group to study its effectiveness.

Inhaled Levodopa to Treat PD Movement “wearing off” Periods

A new study is testing the effects of an experimental inhaled form of levodopa. Researchers at Wayne State University in West Bloomfield, MI developed a new formulation of levodopa that could be inhaled through an inhaler device. It could be used to help ease the “wearing off” episodes of PD patients.

As an alternative to other treatments, this inhaled levodopa could have a big impact on the quality of life of patients with “wearing off” episodes of PD. In addition, the inhaled levodopa may be useful to solve “wearing off” periods induced by interaction between oral levodopa and food. The study will help determine whether this formulation is safe and effective for self-administration at home to treat “wearing off” periods. Further research with larger groups is needed and is currently underway.

Probiotics and Fiber Formula to Reduce Constipation in Parkinson’s

A team of Italian researchers developed an experimental fermented milk drink that consists of several strains of probiotic bacteria and eight grams of fiber. The drink is to help alleviate the common PD non-motor symptom of constipation. To test whether the drink would help relieve constipation, the team of researchers observed its effectiveness with a group of volunteer patients.

As a result, early data has shown that on average patients using this formula had softer and more often bowel movements, as well as a reduced use of laxatives. This specific drink is not available in stores, more research is necessary before it could be safely available in stores, but the early results are very promising.
